If a single person carried within her the spirit of caring and compassion that makes me love Hearth, that person was Shirley. From my first interview with her to literally every subsequent meeting, or chance encounter, or Hearth event, her keen interest in how our residents were doing, but also in us as people doing what we do here, would leave me thinking, I love Shirley.
As a long time member of the board of directors, and subsequently as a member of the board of visitors, she took every opportunity to help, whether it was shopping for holiday gifts or volunteering in some other capacity. A gifted teacher, she had a rich network of friends and fairly often someone would say to me, “I didn't know you worked for Hearth. I just found out from Shirley Thorne!”
